Distant landscapes (Two Flutes)
Distant landscapes by Katrina Penman
One of the main themes of Distant Landscapes is based on the Japanese melody “Sakura” (cherry blossoms). In the area of Spain where I live, we also have many cherry blossom trees, which inspired me to modify the “Sakura” theme into a variation based on the traditional Castilian-Spanish “jota” style (a traditional dance). Thus, the reference to “distant landscapes” searches for the bridge between cultures from far across the globe. The theme in the middle section is inspired by the rise and fall of the waves on the ocean that both divides and joins our continents.
